Accounting for genetics and environment to forecast Parkinson’s disease risk

Complex disorders typically result from a combined interplay between genes and environment. However, most studies take either an epidemiological or a genetic approach to understanding risk factors, rarely considering both elements together. In this issue, Jacobs et al 1 report a multimodal approach to uncover the factors that modify the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease (PD). To achieve this, they exploit the UK Biobank database, which includes genetic, lifestyle and health data collected from ~500 000 volunteers in the UK.
